I Didn’t know I was depressed

Christopher’s steps were pronounced when he walked he dragged his feet and his gaze was sporadic. He had no enthusiasm, didn’t care for friends, and he had bags under his eyes. Christopher’s childhood was spent in a home where his name was only called when he did something wrong. His mother often compared him to his siblings and even told him that he was worthless. Christopher spends his adult life trying to make it from one day to the next because his goal to kill himself. Christopher attended a health and wellness group hoping to find a remedy for the severe joint pain, gastrointestinal problems and insomnia he had been experiencing. It was there that he learned about the profound impact his mental state was having on his physical health. Christopher had been assuming that his physical symptoms were due to a medical problem. He left that group knowing that he now had a choice to make, get treatment for his mental health issues or continue to suffer. What would you do? Individuals a

5 Reasons Why Young Adults get Depressed

Image
There is a gross misperception that when an individual enters young adulthood (between the ages of 18 to 29) they transition into a state of bliss, fun and contentment. On the contrary, it can be extremely difficult to adjust when transitioning from adolescence into adulthood. For many in that age group it is a time of major adjustment, self-discovery, and uncertainty about life. Studies show that mental health problems, social stress and substance abuse issues are prevalent within that age group. There are many factors that may trigger depression among young adults, five of which are mentioned below: 1. Loss of Significant Friendships Oftentimes not much thought is given to the tremendous value of friendships in the life of a young adult. Transition to college seldom results in separation between friends as elementary and middle school disperse to various colleges and universities. Additionally, after graduating from college the young adult may return to native town and may be losin

Depression, You Don’t Control Me Anymore!

Finding the purpose in your Pain My mother always told me growing up, “if you’ve never learned, then you’ve never lived”. She always recounted her life’s journey by sharing a lot of her painful stories. Reflecting on these moments now as an adult, I now appreciate the lesson she always tried to deliver that “there is purpose in your pain”. Life has a way of serving us “blows” that knock the wind out of our lungs! When pain hits the soul, depression may take up the space in our minds, hearts and bodies. Depression is a constant reminder of our failures, faults and troubles. Depression often leads us to believe that things just can’t get any better from here. Challenging these negative thoughts can be difficult and exhausting. After all, depression reminds us of the past experiences, and not what is to come! Many of my clients believe that because I am a therapist , I don’t battle or have never battled with my own pain, trials and tribulations. The truth of the matter is I’ve had my fa

DJing And Capitalism: A Brief History

Image
Fifty years ago, Disco King Mario, Pete DJ Jones, Grandmaster Flowers, Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy Jay, Grand Mixer D.ST and a handful of other DJs birthed and helped cultivate a DJ movement powerful enough to become the nucleus of a culture called HIP-HOP. When you chew on that for a second or two, nothing could be more tragic than to stop and consider the economic inequality which exists within the billion dollar industry that DJing has become. DJing, I’m referencing “quick mixing,” “needle dropping,” “scratching,” “beat juggling,” etc., are techniques that were stumbled upon and created out of struggle. That is to say, a certain set of socio-political conditions in 1970s New York City provoked what us DJs do and our fans see, on social media day in and day out in 2023. Today, according to an analysis by ZipRecruiter, a person who manages or books DJs can make an annual salary upwards of $70,000 minimum. When you compare that to the $48,000 average annual salary of the DJs d

Five Tips For Commanding The Attention Of Your Audience As A DJ

Image
Although your audience isn’t inside the DJ booth with you selecting the music you play and the order in which you play it, they’re still a part of your set. So the deeper the synchronization between you and them, the better the experience of DJing. Here are my five tips for commanding the attention of your audience as a DJ. 1. QUESTION TACTIC The first words you speak into the microphone set the tone for the exchange of energy between you and the people in front of you. Asking a question is a great way to warm up any crowd but asking THE RIGHT question is an art so depending on the situation and the environment, ask something everyone is collectively passionate about. 2. ACTIVE VS PASSIVE VOICE As a listener, I know I’m more inclined to focus my attention on a speaker who sounds excited to talk. So be active as a speaker, you want the intonation in your speech to project power. If you’re passive or soft spoken, it will hamper your ability to get and keep people’s attention. 3. BE SHO
